Nyepi Day 2025: A Sacred Silence on Nusa Lembongan
On 29th March 2025, Nusa Lembongan will embrace total stillness for Nyepi, Bali’s sacred Day of Silence. Marking the beginning of the Hindu New Year, this is a time of deep spiritual reflection, where the island completely shuts down to honour traditions that have been passed down for generations.
WHAT IS NYEPI?
Nyepi, derived from the Balinese word meaning “to be silent,” is a day of self-reflection, purification, and renewal. Unlike festive New Year celebrations, this spiritual observance is dedicated to inner peace and harmony, allowing the island to reset and cleanse negative energies.
TRADITIONS LEADING UP TO NYEPI
Melasti Ceremony
In the days before Nyepi, Balinese Hindus gather for the Melasti Ceremony, a purification ritual held on the beaches. Sacred objects from temples are carried to the ocean in a beautiful and deeply symbolic procession, washing away impurities and renewing spiritual balance.
Ogoh-Ogoh Parade
On the eve of Nyepi, the island comes alive with the Ogoh-Ogoh Parade. Gigantic, hand-crafted paper-mâché effigies symbolising negative spirits are paraded through the streets in a lively display of music and dance. As night falls, the statues are burned, signifying the purification of evil and the welcoming of a fresh start.
WHAT HAPPENS ON NYEPI DAY?
From 6 AM on 29th March until 6 AM on 30th March, the island will be in complete silence. During these 24 hours, there will be no lights and electricity, no work, no noise and entertainment, no travel and outdoor activities, and for some no cooking and eating.
It is time to disconnect from the outside world and embrace peace and tranquility.
